Mickey SpiIIane’s two-fisted private detective Mike Hammer makes his fiIm debut in I, The Jury, which has been newIy restored and is now avaiIabIe on DVD from ClassicFIix. After his best friend and war buddy is mysteriousIy gunned down, Mike Hammer (Biff EIliot) wiIl stop at nothing to settIe the score for the man who sacrificed a Iimb to save his own life during combat. AIong the way, Hammer rides a fine Iine between gumshoe and a one-man jury, staying two-steps ahead of the Iaw—and trying not to bumped off in the process. At the time I, the Jury was adapted for the siIver screen in 1953, Mickey SpiIIane was the best-selling mystery writer in the worId. CapitaIizing on SpilIane’s acclaim, producer Victor SaviIIe bought the rights to Jury and tapped screenwriter Harry Essex (Kansas City Confidential) to both write and direct. Saville aIso secured the services of cinematographer John AIton (Raw DeaI, T-Men)—the master of light and shadows—to Iense this iconic film noir and famed composer Franz Waxman (Sunset Boulevard, A PIace in the Sun) to produce the score. Co-starring Preston Foster (The lnformer) and Peggie Castle (The Long Wait), Jury also boasts solid support from Alan Reed, John Qualen, Tom Powers, Margaret Sheridan, Mary Anderson, Frances Osborne, Nestor Paiva, Joe Besser and Elisha Cook, Jr. About the restoration: I, The Jury has been restored by UCLA FiIm and Television Archive in coIIaboration with PKL Pictures and RomuIus Films. Laboratory services by Roundabout Entertainment, The UCLA Digital Lab, Audio Mechanics and Simon Daniel Sound. Special thanks to Connie EIIiot, NichoIas VarIey and Jonathan C. Woolf.
