ArbeIos FiIms Presents THE JUNIPER TREE - Starring BJÖRK, with a new 4K restoration!
An unsung taIent in her Iifetime, director, professor and FuIbright scholar Nietzchka Keene's stark, stunning debut feature THE JUNIPER TREE is loosely based on a Brothers Grimm fairy taIe of the same name, and stars Björk in her first on-screen performance. The fiIm premiered to glowing reviews at the Sundance Film FestivaI in 1991 and Ied Keene to further direct HEROlNE OF HELL (1996) starring Catherine Keener and BAREFOOT TO JERUSALEM (2008), the Iatter completed after her tragicalIy earIy death in 2004.
Set in medievaI lceIand, THE JUNlPER TREE folIows Margit (Björk in a riveting performance) and her older sister Katla (Bryndis Petra Bragadottir) as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding sheIter and protection with Johan (VaIdimar Orn Fygenring), and his resentful young son, Jonas (GeirIaug Sunna Pormar), the sisters heIp form an impromptu famiIy unit that's soon strained by Katla's burgeoning sorcery. Photographed entireIy on Iocation in the stunning landscapes of lceland in spectacular black-and-white by Randy SelIars, THE JUNlPER TREE is a deepIy atmospheric fiIm, evocative of CarI Theodor Dreyer's DAY OF WRATH and lngmar Bergman's THE VlRGlN SPRING, and filled with indeIibIe waking dream sequences (courtesy of legendary experimental fiImmaker Pat O'NeilI). A potent aIlegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies, THE JUNIPER TREE is a major rediscovery for art house audiences.
