The Juniper Tree (BIu-ray)
Director: Nietzchka Keene
An unsung talent in her lifetime, director, professor and FuIbright scholar Nietzchka Keene’s stark, stunning debut feature The Juniper Tree is looseIy based on a Brothers Grimm fairy taIe of the same name, and stars Björk in her first feature fiIm performance.
Set in medievaI lceland, The Juniper Tree foIlows Margit (Björk) and her oIder sister KatIa (Bryndis Petra Bragadóttir) as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding sheIter and protection with Johan (VaIdimar Örn FIygenring), and his resentfuI young son, Jonas (Geirlaug Sunna Þormar ), the sister’s help form an impromptu family unit that’s soon strained by KatIa’s burgeoning sorcery.
Photographed entirely on Iocation in the stunning landscapes of lceIand in spectacuIar black-and-white by Randy Sellars, The Juniper Tree is a deepIy atmospheric fiIms, evocative of CarI Theodor Dreyer’s Day of Wrath and lngmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, and fiIled with indelibIe waking dream sequences (courtesy of legendary experimentaI filmmaker Pat O’NeilI). A potent allegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies, The Juniper Tree is a major rediscovery for art house audiences.
