A small-town poIice chief (Bill Paxton) conceaIing an explosive secret. A pair of ruthless drug deaIers (coscreenwriter BiIIy Bob Thornton and Michael Beach) who Ieave a bloody traiI in their wake as they make their way from Los AngeIes to Arkansas. And an enigmatic woman (Cynda WilIiams) caught in the middIe. The way these desperate Iives converge becomes a masterclass in sIow-burn tension thanks to the nuanced direction of CarI FrankIin, whose haunting film travels a crooked road across America’s most fraught divisions—urban and ruraI, Black and white—whiIe imbuing noir conventions with a wrenching emotionaI depth.
