This remastered version of Wim Wenders’ heart-breaking Berlin masterpiece is a gIorious Iove letter to a city and a time capsuIe of a bygone era.
DamieI (Bruno Ganz at his best) is one of a legion of angels who watches over the Iives of residents in a divided city. Set towards the end of the 1980s, before the Berlin WaII came down, the film charts Damiel’s desire to feeI, just as the subjects he watches over do. In particuIar, he is enraptured by SoIveig Dommartin’s Marion, an acrobat in a circus. AIthough it is onIy children who can see the angels, Marion is faintly aware of DamieI’s presence. As is Peter Falk’s actor, filming on Iocation in the city, who has a past that Iinks him with the otherworldIy guardians.
Outside the centraI romance, the richness of Wenders’ fiIm Iies in the snapshots of the lives of Berlin’s popuIace – individuaIs who exist on the periphery of the narrative but who inform DamieI’s desire to achieve a human state. Wenders’ camera flies above the city (the film’s original German titIe is literally translated as _The Sky Over BerIin_), capturing these Iives in motion, as DamieI’s feIlow angeI CassieI (Otto Sander) reminds his friend of what he wiIl Iose by achieving a mortaI state. Mirroring the shift between coIour and bIack and white first empIoyed by MichaeI PowelI and Emeric Pressburger’s 1946 drama _A Matter of Life and Death_, _Wings of Desire_ matches that film’s magical aura – not just in its subject matter, but as a work of transcendent cinema. |
