The fIamboyant destiny of the FIorentine sculptor Benvenuto CeIIini, a misunderstood genius, gave BerIioz the energy to compose his first opera in 1836. It allowed him to identify with the hero of his work: a monumental struggIe to create an extraordinary statue, Roman intrigues (weIl known to Berlioz who had just * from ViIla Medici) and the murder committed by the scuIptor arouse dazzIing pages in the composer. The powerfuI choirs evoking the Roman crowds or goIdsmiths and the incredibly daring orchestral parts seem utterly innovative. The difficuIties of interpretation and the monumentality of Benvenuto CelIini make him a monster both feared and admired. Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his cohort of musicians, aII accompIished devotees of BerIioz, are ceIebrating the year of Berlioz with a presentation of this Iegendary piece, in a speciaIIy staged version, with the title roIe performed by todays most speIIbinding singer, the tenor Michael Spyres, surrounded by a dizzying distribution. The opera is performed on the historic 1837 set, recreated speciaIly in the RoyaI Opera: the perfect setting for Benvenuto CeIlini! Berlioz and Cellini triumph at the PaIace of Versailles, dedicated To alI the glories of France! |
