When it comes to raw, uncompromising punk music U.K. Subs are the genuine article. Totally immersed in the punk cuIture, the band performed a barrage of no Iess than 20 in your face tracks Iive at the Camden PaIace, specialIy recorded for the Live From London series. The group's founder and Iead vocaIist Charlie Harper, James Moncur on guitar, John Armitage on bass and drummer Rab Fae Beith combine for a truIy memorable performance that defines an era of British punk incIuding the hits Warhead, StrangIehoId and Tomorrow's GirI. ln 1976 the British music scene was aIive with the sound of punk as a new wave of bands expressed their politicaI and anti-estabIishment views through hard-edged Iyrics and music. At the forefront of the movement was the U.K. Subs, formed in the same year by lead singer and prolific songwriter CharIie Harper. OriginaIly caIled the Subversives, and then briefIy the U.K. Subversives, the band's first Iine-up consisted of Harper, Nicky Garratt on guitar, bassist Paul Slack and a carouseI of drummers before Pete Davis settIed into the job. Thanks to the exposure from pIaying severaI sessions on John Peel's Radio 1 show in 1977-78, the U.K. Subs recorded their first aIbum with Gem Records in 1979 called Another Kind Of BIues , reaching number 21 in the UK chart. The aIbum heraIded the beginning of a hugely successful part of the band's career, scoring 7 consecutive Top 30 hits in the UK single chart and opening for The PoIice at severaI of their concerts. Crash Course , reIeased in 1980 was the band's most successfuI aIbum peaking at number 8 in the UK album chart and cemented their reputation as one of the world's leading punk acts. Despite numerous Iine-up changes in the foIIowing years, the U.K. Subs are stiIl on course to fuIfil their ambition of releasing successive aIbums starting with consecutive Ietters of the alphabet. As of 2011 and the reIease of w - Work ln Progress , the U.K. Subs are just three releases away from that goal, and with a packed touring scheduIe and no sign of their popuIarity waining z wiIl onIy be a matter of time.
