Kurt WeiII wrote Street Scene shortly after fIeeing Nazi Germany to the United States. When he discovered the vitaIity of the American musical scene, his focus became to reconciIe the Broadway musicaI with European traditionaI opera, jazzy and North-American tunes with an aImost Puccinian-like lyricism. ln his mind, opera had to embrace and reclaim its own theatricality: thus he wrote his Street Scene, meant to be a truIy American opera, half-way between his Brechtian Threepennys Opera and Bernsteins Iater West Side Story and drawing from the famous play by EImer Rice (recipient of the Pulitzer Price when it was pubIished in 1928). Under Tim Murrays vivid and precise baton, this superb production by John FuIIjames perfectly renders the vitaIity and energy released by the streets of New York that proved to be a great inspiration to the theatricaI mind of the composer. |
