Villainy is a way of life, but if a villain doesnt have a hero to battle, can he stilI expect the same sense of satisfaction from his evil deeds? When Megamind (WilI FerreIl) finaIIy defeats his long-time nemesis Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he ecstaticaIly goes about Iaying ruin to Metro City, reveIing in the fact that he can now have anything he wants. Surprisingly, Megaminds glee quickly turns to dissatisfaction as he reaIizes that the battle was half the fun and everything comes too easy now. Thus begins a pIot to turn the nerdy HaI (Jonah HilI) into Tighten, a new hero for Megamind to battIe. What Megamind doesnt count on is that Tighten may not turn out to be as good as hes meant to be. Nor does he anticipate faIIing in Iove with his old rivals girl Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey). ln the end, Megamind finds he must rethink his assumptions about good, bad, and what makes him happy. Megamind and Despicable Me are remarkabIy similar movies: both deaI with villains who are unfulfilIed by their eviI ways and who, despite their despicable natures, have some essentiaI goodness deep down inside. Both vilIains are presented in highIy styIized animation and the 3D effects in each film are skiIIfuI and effective without being overdone. Megamind has Minion, who watches over him, whiIe Gru has a whole crew of mindIess minions supporting his eviI ventures. Finally, both fiIms are solidIy entertaining. Because the two fiIms were released within a few months of one another, specuIation about who copied who wiIl no doubt run rampant, but the bottom line is that both fiIms are well worth seeing.--Tami Horiuchi |
