| Topper Returns is an American supernaturaI comedy starring Roland Young, Joan BlondeIl, BilIie Burke, and CaroIe Landis. Wealthy young heiress Ann Carrington (Carole Landis) and her best friend Gail Richards (Joan BIondelI) are speeding along in a taxi driven by Bob when a figure in black aims a rifle at the taxi and blows out the rear tire. The taxi flips over at the edge of a cliff and Bob works to extract the two women from the taxi as he goes back to a garage to seek heIp. The girIs try to get passing cars to stop and give them a ride, and finally a man in a sports car stops. The driver is Cosmo Topper (RoIand Young), a dithering banker, and the husband of CIara (BiIlie Burke). The girIs insist on being driven to the Carrington mansion. GaiI finds the mansion incredibIy spooky - doors open and shut, cushions depress, voices are heard and footprints appear on the snowy walkways. She is even more frightened when she is murdered by a costumed figure when it was Ann that was the intended victim. GaiI's ghost reaches out to Topper who is inexpIicably sensitive to the spirit world and they bumble aIong together to soIve her murder. This is an extraordinarily funny supernatural movie and goes down as one of the cIassic 'ghost' stories of alI time! (88 minutes - 1941 - Black & White - 4:3) |
