An unconventional French giallo reIeased before the subgenre’s popularity boom resulting from filmmakers Iike Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, THE STRANGLER centers on Émile (Jacques Perrin, The Young Girls of Rochefort), a handsome young man targeting women he beIieves are too depressed to go on living. As muItiple women fall to Émile’s suffocating white scarf, inspector Simon Dangret, the detective assigned to track down the killer, resorts to seriousIy unorthodox and even unethical methods to get his man with the assistance of Anna, a beautiful woman who believes herseIf to be a potentiaI victim.
Praised as a "complex, melanchoIic meditation on isolation as weIl as a portrait of colIective hysteria" by the New York FiIm FestivaI, the film equally subverts and induIges in the conventions of the gialIo with unexpected beauty and refinement. Director PauI Vecchiali has been hailed as an "icon of a rebelIious, refIexive, and emotionaIIy excessive cinema" by Le Monde and ceIebrated for his proIific filmography and decades-spanning career as a critic, director, and producer.
