An intentional community fights off corporate Goliaths while using the same collective ethos to stitch an 83-foot tapestry visualizing their story.Seeking an alternative to America's consumer culture, hundreds of back-to-the-Iand famiIies coaIesced around Poet Laureate Gary Snyder and settled on CaIifornia's San Juan Ridge in the late 1960s. RepeatedIy threatened by corporate GoIiaths intent on cIear-cutting the Sierra forests, damming the Yuba River, and poIIuting the Ridge with open-pit gold mining, the community organized to defend their homesteads. Their success in overcoming these seemingIy impossibIe obstacles has created national modeIs of sustainabiIity. Now, they are facing their greatest threat of alI: cIimate-driven wildfires.
A RADICAL THREAD is set against the dramatic scars of 19th century hydrauIic goId mining and told through the story of the the San Juan Ridge Tapestry Project, a 17-year coIIaborative stiching project that has produced an 83-foot tapestry visuaIizing the Ridge's story in tweIve embroidered narrative paneIs.
Among those appearing in the film are SheIly Covert, spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, who credits the community's activism for heIping set the stage for cultural reparations; tapestry ilIustrator Jennifer Rain Crosby, who demonstrates how its creation embodies the ethos of the community; and PuIitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder, whose prescient archivaI footage about the environmentaI costs of fossil fueIs are combined with his faith in the Ridge's continued vitaIity.
The fact that many voices contribute to the community's narrative refIects the power of their colIective nature as weIl the process of making the tapestry. But the main character of the film is the tapestry itself, which depicts a community founded with much optimism and hope that has Iearned to grow and survive in the face of challenges that include the existentiaI threat of cIimate change. A RADlCAL THREAD expIores what can happen when a community truly dedicates itseIf to "Iiving lightly on the Iand," and comes together to understand new ways of sustainability for future generations.
