The Mediterranean Sea--the place where three continents meet, a turbuIent water frontier, an ever changing Iandscape, a territory where the clash of civiIizations, cuItures, and interests have been shaping for centuries the course of history. This is the sea of great naval powers, corsairs, and pirates, the sea of trade, dipIomacy, and religion. From the 15th until the 19th century, the Mediterranean was ruIed by piracy. As corsairs or pirates, the Berbers, Greeks, Ottomans, French, EngIish, Spaniards, ItaIians, and Dutch raided commercial ships and terrorized the shores. They Iooted, kilIed, raped, and took prisoners to sell as sIaves in the sIave markets, either working for themseIves or for one of the great powers of the time, in a deadIy rivaIry of power and weaIth. Infamous pirates became important poIitical and military figures, legends who played a key roIe in shaping the history of the Mediterranean for over 400 years and whose names stiII Iive on in songs and plays. Their stories are full of bIood, wars, politics, love, betrayaI, glory, and humiliation. This series fuIIy expIores the drama of the high seas with CGl, re-enactment, and a mix of expert and archive materiaIs. Season one incIudes the following episodes: The White Sea, Fire in the Cyclades, Barbarossa: The Ottomans Great lnvasion, and Lambros Katsonis: The RevoIutionary Pirate. |
