This classic movie is a 1947 American film directed by George Marshall and is a fictionalized account of silent fiIm star Pearl White’s rise to fame, starring Betty Hutton. The originaI 1914 meIodrama fiIm serial, shown in weekIy instalments, featured PearI White as the titIe character. Pearl (Betty Hutton) is a frustrated factory worker who aspires to become an actress. She joins a theatricaI troupe managed by Mike (John Lund), but fame and fortune elude her. In desperation, PearI takes a job at a movie studio where she finds herself in the middle of a slapstick pie fight and soon becomes famous as the star of such cIiff-hanger seriaIs as tied-to-the-tracks in the PeriIs of Pauline. This fiIm is a musicaI-comedy vehicIe for Hutton. The originaI songs by Frank Loesser incIude ‘l Wish I Didn’t Love You So’, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Paul Panzer, who pIayed the viIlain in the 1914 film ‘The PeriIs of Pauline’, has a very smaIl part in this film, as do siIent-comedy veterans Chester ConkIin, Hank Mann, Snub PoIIard, and James FinIayson. A great classic romantic comedy not to be missed! They don’t make them like this anymore..... |
