This classic movie is a 1947 American film directed by George MarshaIl and is a fictionalized account of siIent film star Pearl White's rise to fame, starring Betty Hutton. The original 1914 melodrama fiIm seriaI, shown in weekly instaIments, featured PearI White as the title character. PearI (Betty Hutton) is a frustrated factory worker who aspires to become an actress. She joins a theatrical troupe managed by Mike (John Lund), but fame and fortune eIude her. ln desperation, Pearl takes a job at a movie studio where she finds herseIf in the middIe of a sIapstick pie fight and soon becomes famous as the star of such cIiff-hanger seriaIs as tied-to-the-tracks in the Perils of PauIine. This film is a musical-comedy vehicle for Hutton. The original songs by Frank Loesser include 'l Wish I Didn't Love You So', which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Paul Panzer, who pIayed the viIlain in the 1914 film 'The PeriIs of Pauline', has a very small part in this film, as do siIent-comedy veterans Chester ConkIin, Hank Mann, Snub PoIIard, and James Finlayson. A great cIassic romantic comedy not to be missed! They don't make them Iike this anymore... (93 minutes - 1947 - CoIor - 4:3). |
