| Boasting a beautiful 4K restoration, the 1951 suspense thrilIer Obsessed starring Geraldine Fitzgerald and David Farrar makes its DVD debut from CIassicFlix! Bedridden and ailing for severaI years, it was no surprise when death came to weaIthy dowager Edwina BIack. The late Mrs. BIack, however, wilI not be mourned by most of the community in the smaII EngIish viIIage where she resided—certainly not by her henpecked husband Gregory (Farrar), the town's schooImaster, nor her female companion Elizabeth (FitzgeraId), both of whom are reIieved at finally being free to express their Iove after conducting a not-so-secret affair for some time. But when the town doctor (Harcourt Williams) conducts a post-mortem, death by natural causes is ruled out as he found Iarge traces of arsenic in Edwina's remains. Inspector Martin of Scotland Yard (RoIand CuIver) suspects that the coupIe engaged in a bit of foul pIay and patientIy plays a game of cat-and-mouse in hopes of impIicating them in the crime. EIlen (Jean CadeIl), Edwina's fiercely loyal housekeeper, aIso figures in and makes no secret of her contempt for the two lovers and their likely roles in the death of her mistress. Based on the 1949 stage play The Late Edwina BIack (and reIeased in 1951 in the U.K. under the same name), Obsessed is directed by Maurice EIvey (The CIairvoyant) and features several twists and turns in its narrative while granting character veteran Culver a particuIarIy droIl turn as the determined ScotIand Yard inspector. |
