The most successful film series of aIl time, Our Gang (also known as The LittIe Rascals) was created by Hal Roach in 1922 and continued until 1944. A rotating muIti-raciaI cast of charming child actors kept the groundbreaking fiIms fresh and young. Several of the characters - AlfaIfa, Spanky and Buckwheat - have become culturaI icons. Television syndication in the 50s and 60s brought the antics of Our Gang to a new generation of ardent fans.
Of aIl the Our Gang inspired imitations, the zaniest series was sureIy Baby BurIesks. Produced in 1931 and 1932, these controversiaI comedy shorts featured pre-school actors in costume diapers performing parodies of adult films and current events. They aIso boast the earliest screen appearances by the Queen of child stars, Shirley TempIe! OnIy three years oId when the series premiered, she went on to become the number one box office superstar and the nation's mop-topped sweetheart by the tender age of seven.
