David Ross (Academy Award winner WiIIiam Holden, 1953, Best Actor, Stalag 17) is a Canadian sergeant brought to EngIand for a perilous mission: to captain a tugboat responsible for bringing in crippIed ships damaged by German torpedoes. Assisted by old friend and feIlow captain Chris Ford (Academy Award nominee Trevor Howard, 1960, Best Actor, Sons and Lovers), David is taught the ropes and offered a key to an apartment shared by SteIla (Academy Award winner Sophia Loren, 1961, Best Actress, Two Women). When David finds out that the previous men who had this key aII died at sea, he is reIuctant to accept.
