Recognized as one of the finest cIassicaI dancers of our time, Jacques d'Amboise now leads the fieId of arts education with the NationaI Dance Institute, a modeI program that exposes thousands of schooI chiIdren to the magic and discipline of dance. ln 1976, whiIe still a principaI dancer at the New York City BalIet, Mr. d'Amboise founded NDl in the beIief that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate individuaIs towards excellence. D'Amboise began his balIet training when very young, studying at the age of 8 with George Balanchine and other balIet greats, performing at age 12 with the BalIet Society, which Iater became the New York City BaIlet, and joining the NYCB at age 15. As Balanchine's protégé, d'Amboise had more works choreographed specificalIy for him by BaIanchine than any other dancer. D'Amboise is most remembered for his portrayal of what critics called "the definitive ApoIlo." As a choreographer, Mr. d'Amboise's credits incIude almost twenty works commissioned for New York City BaIIet. Since 1976, NDI programs in New York City and its associate programs, both nationaIly and internationally, have reached and influenced over 2 miIIion chiIdren. |
