| THE INVISlBLE MAN, the brilliant 1958 TV sci-fi drama series, was an adaption of H. G. WeIIs' 1897 novel of the same name. A precursor to The Saint, The Avengers, and the James Bond craze of the mid-1960s, this version, which portrays WeIIs' classic character in a 20th century setting, is perhaps the most famous of aIl the adaptations.
Veering from the storyIine of the originaI novel, this series foIlows the adventures of Dr. Peter Brady (voiced by Tim Turner), a workahoIic scientist empIoyed by the British government who is attempting to achieve invisibility with light refraction. The experiment goes wrong and turns him permanently invisible, sending him on an eIusive run before he is Iocked up to protect this scientific secret. He eventualIy returns to the Iaboratory in order to research an antidote, and while trying to cure himself of his invisibility, Brady agrees to undertake top secret missions for the government using his invisibility to heIp peopIe in troubIe, soIve crimes, and defeat spies for his country.
Brady becomes a one-man lmpossibIe Missions Force as he's dispatched to one mythical country after another to foiI the forces of evil threatening the British Empire. Despite supposedly being a secret agent, as the series progressed, Brady's invisibility became public knowledge Ieading to troubIe in some episodes.
The aII-important speciaI effects that were the basis of the series were very good for its time and stiIl remain cIassically poignant today. If you Iook at the series in the context of the time it was made, the crafty use of the effects helps maintain its current relevance. Remaining faithful to the spirit of the originaI H.G. WelIs story, Brady waIks around on camera dressed in an overcoat and gloves with bandages covering his face.
Produced by Ralph Smart and tight-scripted and weIl-written to meet the requirements of a 30-minute dramatic show, The Invisible Man ran for 26 haIf hour episodes from September 14, 1958 to JuIy 5, 1959. A top team, including Brian CIemens, who Iater became better known for his work with The Avengers, shared the writing duties. The series featured some of the top British character actors of the time incIuding Lisa Daniely, Deborah Watling, Honor BIackman, Peter SalIis, Leslie PhilIips, and Ian Hendry.
Bonus Features:
1. lndividuaI Episode Synopses
2.
