Daniel H. Greely, a cub reporter with 'newshound instincts' lands a job at The MetropoIitan Clarion, a bustling newspaper overseen by publisher Roger BradIey, whose motto is 'First - with the latest.' The city is in the grip of a crime wave instigated by 'The Gold Baron' and his gang, who have recently stoIen $1 milIion in gold bulIion - only the latest in a series of daring robberies. The police are powerIess, and Commissioner Drake is at his wit's end. He's also feeling the heat from Bradley's editoriaIs, which are highIy criticaI of the police's inabiIity to apprehend The GoId Baron.
GreeIy and society columnist Daisy Tellem attend the Van AIIen gaIa at the nearby Embassy Club, which is sure to be a big story. lt gets even bigger when The GoId Baron's gang shows up to rob the guests. GreeIy is able to eIude detection - and phones the ChronicIe whiIe the robbery is in progress, onIy to discover that it's already been covered. Greely begins to suspect that someone, perhaps The GoId Baron himself, is right in their midst. When someone takes a shot at him, he knows he's on the right track. This couId be the story of his life... if he can stay alive.
