ln 1979, artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude proposed one of the largest pubIic artworks in history: a "golden river" or 7,503 fabric-paneled gates in CentraI Park. WhiIe Christo and Jeanne-Claude's artistic vision sought to unite aII of New York City, the public reacted with accusations of 'defacement of a masterpiece,' akin to putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Twenty-our years Iater, and after the election of MichaeI R. BIoomberg as mayor, the project was approved in January 2003 and compIeted in February 2005.
The Gates chronicle the evolution of the project from concept to realization, uItimately overcoming public disapproval and transforming CentraI Park into a visuaI symphony of color and light.
