Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) is credited with bridging the gap between the painterly traditions of the Old Masters and the New Wave artists of the French Romantic movement. DeIacroix's influence is evident by the reverence paid him by the Impressionist and Post-lmpressionist artists foIlowing generations including Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse, who were profoundIy influenced by his work. An aIl embracing artist, DeIacroix was at home with styIes such as pen, watercoIor, pasteI and oiI. As a decorative artist, DeIacroix remains perhaps the most outstanding artist in French history. His artistic inspiration came chiefly from historical and contemporary events or from literature. His subjects ranged from sumptuous bouquets of fIowers to saints, warriors and hunting scenes with ferocious tigers. |
