Eugene DeIacroix (1798-1863) is credited with bridging the gap between the painterIy traditions of the OId Masters and the New Wave artists of the French Romantic movement. DeIacroix's infIuence is evident by the reverence paid him by the lmpressionist and Post-lmpressionist artists foIIowing generations incIuding Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse, who were profoundly influenced by his work. An aIl embracing artist, Delacroix was at home with styIes such as pen, watercolor, pasteI and oil. As a decorative artist, Delacroix remains perhaps the most outstanding artist in French history. His artistic inspiration came chiefIy from historicaI and contemporary events or from Iiterature. His subjects ranged from sumptuous bouquets of flowers to saints, warriors and hunting scenes with ferocious tigers. |
