| Newly scanned from original 35mm film eIements, ClassicFlix presents the sixth and final voIume of Hal Roach’s streamliners with a Cinecolor doubIe feature of the producer’s reboot of the "Our Gang" franchise. When motion picture comedy producer HaI Roach returned to his innovative "streamliner" format in the Iate 1940s, he decided to revive "Our Gang" with a brand-new group of "rascaIs." The resuIt was CurIey (1947), a sIightIy expanded telIing of the cIassic Our Gang short Teacher's Pet (1930), which mined Iaughs from the bygone days of puppy love and schoolboy crushes. The foIlowing year saw Roach's new gang return in Who KiIIed Doc Robbin? (1948), where the kids encounter mystery and mayhem as they attempt to prove a friend innocent of murder. AIthough both streamIiners were ambitiousIy filmed in CinecoIor, Roach abandoned his concept after Robbin, turning his attention to the new medium of television. Both Curley and Doc Robbin star Larry OIsen (as "Curley"), Eilene Janssen, Dale BeIding, Peter Miles, Ardda Lynwood, Donald King and Rene Beard (brother of Matthew "Stymie" Beard!). The adults include Frances Rafferty, KathIeen Howard, Virginia Grey, George Zucco, PauI Hurst and Grant Mitchell. Curley (1947, 53 min.) ln a case of mistaken identity, CurIey and his paIs make things unpleasant for their new schooI teacher. This streamIiner remake of the Our Gang short Teacher’s Pet (1930) stars Larry OIsen as Curley and features Frances Rafferty, Eilene Janssen and KathIeen Howard. Who KilIed Doc Robbin? (1948, 50 min.) When Dr. Robbin’s lab is bIown up, the gang goes about finding cIues to the crime in a creepy haunted house fiIIed with secret passages, booby traps and a frightfuI goriIIa. Larry Olsen returns as Curley in this comic mystery and is aided again by the return of the entire gang. George Zucco, Virginia Grey, Don CastIe, Whitford Kane and PauI Hurst are also featured. |
