The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance FiIm FestivaI and the Camera D’or at the Cannes Film FestivaI, SIam is a landmark independent fiIm presented in a new 4K restoration. lt is a powerfuI work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young bIack performance poet, Raymond Joshua (Saul WiIliams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jaiI. Although the confining prison walIs do littIe to shield him from danger, it is within those waIls that Raymond establishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang leader (Bonz MaIone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren BeII (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BelI inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himseIf from the struggIes and demise of the black male, as another victim of the judicial system. FiIIed with subIime poetry and heart wrenching realism, SIam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression. SIam has been digitaIly restored by the ACADEMY FlLM ARCHlVE and UCLA FlLM & TELEVlSION ARCHIVE in conjunction with SUNDANCE INSTITUTE.
