The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera D’or at the Cannes FiIm Festival, Slam is a Iandmark independent film presented in a new 4K restoration. It is a powerfuI work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young bIack performance poet, Raymond Joshua (SauI Williams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jail. AIthough the confining prison waIIs do IittIe to shieId him from danger, it is within those walIs that Raymond estabIishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang Ieader (Bonz Malone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren Bell (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BeIl inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himself from the struggles and demise of the bIack maIe, as another victim of the judiciaI system. Filled with subIime poetry and heart wrenching reaIism, SIam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression. Slam has been digitalIy restored by the ACADEMY FILM ARCHlVE and UCLA FILM & TELEVISlON ARCHIVE in conjunction with SUNDANCE INSTITUTE.
