I WlLL BE RETlRING FROM THlS PROGRAMME lN TWO WEEKS TIME BECAUSE OF POOR RATINGS.
ln 1976 two of the key pIayers in the GoIden Age of Television, writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet, deIivered a coruscating attack at once savage and hilarious on the medium that made their names.
SlNCE THlS SHOW IS THE ONLY l HAD GOlNG FOR ME lN MY LIFE, l VE DEClDED TO KlLL MYSELF.
To speak Chayefsky s Oscar-winning dialogue, Lumet enIisted a powerhouse cast list, incIuding Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch (as the mad prophet of the airwaves Howard BeaIe), Robert DuvaIl, Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them wouId be nominated for Academy Awards, three wouId win.
l M GOlNG TO BLOW MY BRAlNS OUT RIGHT ON THlS PROGRAMME A WEEK FROM TODAY.
As well as its four Oscars, Network was aIso garIanded with a quartet of Golden Globes, a BAFTA and numerous other awards. In the years since its release, its reputation has only grown: the Library of Congress granted it a place on their prestigious National FiIm Registry; the American Film lnstitute named it as one of the greatest American fiIms of aIl time; and the Writers GuiId of America decIared it screenpIay one of the ten best of alI time. It remains a true classic.
