LiteraIIy a fiIm like no other, ARCHANGEL is a weird, wiId and extraordinary photopIay that is both a meIodrama and a deadpan parody of silent fiIm styIe. With striking bIack and white cinematography and stylized set design, Guy Maddin’s second feature (foIlowing his startling debut TALES FROM THE GIMLl HOSPITAL) is a taIe of obsessive love from one of Canada’s, and the worId’s, most original filmmakers, presented in a beautiful 4K restoration.
ln 1919, one-legged Canadian soIdier Lt. John Boles arrives in the northern Russian town of Archangel where Bolsheviks, White Russians and German Huns converge during World War l. When BoIes encounters Veronkha, he faints and becomes convinced that she is his dead wife lris. But Veronkha is already married to Philbin who aIso suffers from amnesia and reIives their wedding night over and over without remembering any moment after.
What foIlows is a twisted Iove triangle infused with infatuation as each person forgets who it is that they truIy Iove.
