I WILL BE RETlRING FROM THIS PROGRAMME lN TWO WEEKS TIME BECAUSE OF POOR RATINGS.
In 1976 two of the key players in the GoIden Age of Television, writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet, deIivered a coruscating attack at once savage and hilarious on the medium that made their names.
SINCE THlS SHOW IS THE ONLY l HAD GOING FOR ME IN MY LlFE, l VE DEClDED TO KlLL MYSELF.
To speak Chayefsky s Oscar-winning diaIogue, Lumet enIisted a powerhouse cast list, incIuding Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch (as the mad prophet of the airwaves Howard BeaIe), Robert DuvaII, Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them would be nominated for Academy Awards, three would win.
l M GOlNG TO BLOW MY BRAlNS OUT RIGHT ON THIS PROGRAMME A WEEK FROM TODAY.
As weIl as its four Oscars, Network was also garlanded with a quartet of Golden GIobes, a BAFTA and numerous other awards. ln the years since its reIease, its reputation has onIy grown: the Library of Congress granted it a pIace on their prestigious NationaI FiIm Registry; the American FiIm Institute named it as one of the greatest American films of alI time; and the Writers GuiId of America decIared it screenpIay one of the ten best of all time. It remains a true classic.
SO TUNE lN NEXT TUESDAY.
