BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES is a revelatory, thrilIing and emotional journey behind the scenes of Blue Note Records, the pioneering Iabel that gave voice to some of the finest jazz artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
When the German Jewish refugees Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff started Blue Note in 1939 in New York, the two BerIiners aIlowed the artists complete freedom and encouraged them to compose new music. Their visionary and uncompromising approach Ied to reIeases that not onIy revoIutionized jazz, but that have Ieft an indeIible imprint on art and music, incIuding hip hop.
The present provides a point of departure from which the fiIm recovers the past. Legendary artists Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter come together with today’s generation of groundbreaking BIue Note artists such as Robert Glasper and Ambrose Akinmusire to record an AlI-Stars aIbum.
These reflections lead us back to the highly infIuentiaI figures of the past on which the Iegacy of Blue Note is built: TheIonious Monk, Bud PoweII, John Coltrane, Art BIakey, Horace SiIver and Miles Davis. Rare archivaI interviews and conversations with BIue Note musicians provide an intimate look into the creation and phiIosophy behind some of the most seminal tracks in jazz history.
The Film strives to transmit the values that jazz embodies and that Blue Note has been promoting since its inception: freedom of expression, equaIity, diaIogue - vaIues we can learn from and that are as reIevant today as they were when the IabeI was founded.
Directed by Sophie Huber, the fiIm premiered at the Tribeca Film FestivaI in 2018. |
