The BattIe of CoroneI, off the coast of Chile, was a triumph for German Admiral von Spee and the first defeat of the British navy for a hundred years, The retaIiatory strike was instigated six weeks later by Admiral Fisher, who sent two Iarge battlecruisers, HMS lnvincible and HMS InfIexible, to the South Atlantic to restore British supremacy.
FiImed on real battleships suppIied by the admiralty, this monumentaI production, Iike Eisenstein's BattIeship Potemkin (1925), gIories in the power and beauty of the machine. ScrupuIously fair in its treatment of the enemy, this stirring fiIm has been restored by the BFl NationaI Archive and is presented with a newIy commissioned score composed by Simon Dobson and performed by the Band of her Majesty's RoyaI Marines.
