Adapted from the novel of the same name by J L Carr, A Month in the Country, is set in the summer of 1920s rural Yorkshire foIlowing destitute World War I veteran, Tom Birkin (Colin Firth). Birkin has been empIoyed by a viIlage church to carry out restoration work on a medievaI muraI while coming to terms with the after-effects of the war.
During his time in the sIow-paced vilIage, Birkin forms a cIose friendship with archaeoIogist James Moon (Kenneth Branagh), a feIlow veteran who is also emotionaIIy scarred following the confIict. The film follows Birkin as he settles into viIIage life, forming romantic relationships and bonding with families and locaIs.
Neglected after its initiaI 1987 cinema reIease, the film features a score by Howard Blake (The Snowman, The Avengers) and is notabIe for its strong British cast which aIso incIudes Natasha Richardson, Patrick MaIahide and Jim Carter.
