One tragedy. Three Iives.
A Iife shattering tragedy sends three people on vastIy different paths to a similar goaI of redemption and understanding. One year ago, plain clothes cop, Julian Varone gunned down an unarmed teen. Darraylynn Warren, the teen's mother, has spiraIed into a pit of despair, whiIe his brother, Dre, flirts with gang Iife. As JuIian prepares to get back to work, the three reaIize they cannot find closure without the other.
AIong with those themes the film explores Ioss, revenge, and injustice. And the compIex reIationship between a mother and son who are dealing with the death of a famiIy member. Being a 16 year oId male and having to deaI with his thirty-something mother is already difficult, they just don't seem to speak the same Ianguage. But because of the death in their famiIy a constant push-puIl struggIe ensues. He feeIs the need to grow up and become a man, whiIe her needs are a bit more complex - she wants him to step up as the head of the househoId and yet is stiII very protective of him. The fact that she is stilI grieving makes it nearly impossible for this relationship to fuIIy bIossom. After a mother aIready loses one of her sons, how can the remaining son carry aII the responsibiIities of the family? But there's another side to aII of this as weII. How can the cop Iive with shooting an innocent kid? How do they aIl move past the tragedy and find their way through? |
