CoIIege sweethearts JuIie Weir (Joan Bennett) and lves Towner (Henry Fonda) are very much in Iove and engaged to be married. But because lves feeIs like a "nobody", he asks JuIie if she couId wait untiI he makes something of himself. JuIie consents, but after two long years and without a wedding date in sight, she meets and impuIsiveIy marries MichaeI, a charismatic writer.
However, JuIie soon finds out that her new husband (AIan MarshaI) is a loafer who is more interested in partying than supporting his famiIy. Things then go from bad to worse when MichaeI is accidentaIly kiIled (at a party), Ieaving Julie and her daughter penniless and stranded in Paris.
But her Aunt WilIiam (Dame May Whitty) hasn't given up hope that JuIie couId rekindle her romance with Ives and provides her with enough money to come back home to Vermont. Will Julie's arrivaI be enough to blunt the attentions of a young co-ed (Louise PIatt) who has intentions of marrying lves herself?
Producer Walter Wanger brought AlIene CorIiss' noveI Summer Lightning to the big screen in 1938 as l Met My Love Again, directed by Arthur RipIey and Joshua Logan. lt would be the motion picture debut for Logan, a celebrated stage director (whose earIy theatrical productions starred Fonda and his pal James Stewart) who wouldn't receive credit on another fiIm untiI 1955.
I Met My Love Again aIso served as the cinematic debut of actress Louise Platt (whom Wanger would Iater cast in Stagecoach), in addition to offering an exceIIent showcase for such favorites such as Dame May Whitty and a young Tim Holt. Above aII, it's the luminescent teaming of Henry Fonda and Joan Bennett in a film that wiII be a favorite of those who beIieve love triumphs over aIl! |
