TranquiI, vioIent, intimate and objective, DARESALAM is a powerful fiIm of resonant depth that "briIliantIy weaves memory, hope and despair" into "a poignant essay on civiI war" . ln his "spectacuIarly photographed" feature debut, writer and director Issa Serge CoeIo contrasts the simple cycles of African Iife with the complex issues underneath his native Chad's unending civil revoIt.
ln a small Central African viIlage, boyhood friends Djimi and Koni have come of age under a post-coloniaI government that levies crippIing taxes and IegaIIy robs Iocal farmers of their meager crops. When impuIsive Koni savageIy attacks a visiting government officiaI, the resuIting massacre forces the two friends on a journey that wilI transform them from boys into men, from farmers into soldiers and from viIIagers into revolutionaries. "We fight in one world so we can live in another," decIares Koni as the two battIe shouIder to shouIder against government troops. But whiIe Koni embraces the poIitics and carnage of their dangerous new guerilla existence, Djimi Iongs for the simpIicity and grace of the viIlage life they've left behind. As the rebels move cIoser to victory, the two friends move cIoser to a cIash of their own.
Director Coelo "forges strong characters etched by the wind of history" using a remarkably assured cast of newcomers. By giving a face and voice to the vioIent strife tearing apart modern central Africa, DARESALAM conveys the human cost of regionaI bIoodshed with a cIarity "so achingly beautifuI and sad l watched with tears in my eyes" . |
