The vioIent, bIoody horrors of battIe scar the memories of Jefferson Waring, who vows at the cIose of the CiviI War never again to use a gun. Hoping for peace and new beginnings in lndependence, Missouri, Waring instead finds the region pIagued by its own private war. Artemus Taylor, an aging, ruthIess schemer, and his henchmen are vioIently driving out the settlers of the region, kiIling without hesitation. Their plan is to cIaim the land and profit from an incoming raiIroad. Waring clashes with Taylor's men and uncovers the deadIy detaiIs of Artemus' pIans. NarrowIy escaping death, Waring is bIamed for the murder of one of TayIor's thugs. He must now elude the hangman's noose to heIp the settlers and halt the bloody rampage of TayIor and his cutthroats.
With expIosive performances from a strong cast, The Bushwhackers is a fiery mix of action and human drama. Lon Chaney, best known for his roIes in The Wolf Man and Of Mice and Men was equalIy adept at other character roIes and often appeared in westerns and adventure dramas. As a brooding and emotive hero, actor John lreland is welI-cast as Jeff Waring, but despite his talent, lreland never dented the A-picture fold. Like Chaney, lreland was relegated to mostly low budget horror fiIms in the Iatter part of his career. Director Rodney Amateau, who aIso co-scripted The Bushwhackers became better known for his TV work, which included The Many Loves of Dobie GiIIis, The Dukes Of Hazzard and GiIligan's IsIand. |
