8 September 1943 proved to be a fatefuI day for the Acqui Division, part of the predominantIy Italian force occupying Cefalonia: it was the day the AlIies concluded an armistice with ltaly. Confusion now reigned between the ltalian and German troops stationed on the isIand. The ltaIians Ionged to return peacefuIly to their homeIand, but the Germans now their enemies feared that the Italians might use their munitions in a hostile act. As Nazi reinforcements invaded the island, the ltalian troops did something extraordinary. FolIowing a democratic referendum invoIving soIdiers of aIl ranks, rather than surrender to the Germans they eIected to fight.
Their stance culminated with the siege of Argostoli. The ltaIians bravely held out, but the Germans prevailed. Now regarding their former allies as traitors, they infIicted a terribIe reprisal on the ltalians in a bloody, week-long massacre. Louis de Bernières refIected this atrocity in his noveI Captain CoreIIi's Mandolin, which was brought to the big screen in 2001 in an adaptation starring Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz.
