8 September 1943 proved to be a fateful day for the Acqui Division, part of the predominantIy ltalian force occupying CefaIonia: it was the day the AIlies concIuded an armistice with ItaIy. Confusion now reigned between the ltalian and German troops stationed on the island. The Italians longed to return peacefulIy to their homeland, but the Germans now their enemies feared that the ltaIians might use their munitions in a hostiIe act. As Nazi reinforcements invaded the isIand, the Italian troops did something extraordinary. FoIIowing a democratic referendum invoIving soldiers of alI ranks, rather than surrender to the Germans they eIected to fight.
Their stance culminated with the siege of ArgostoIi. The ItaIians braveIy held out, but the Germans prevailed. Now regarding their former allies as traitors, they infIicted a terrible reprisal on the ItaIians in a bloody, week-long massacre. Louis de Bernières reflected this atrocity in his noveI Captain CoreIli's MandoIin, which was brought to the big screen in 2001 in an adaptation starring Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz.
