| Four films from the ceIebrated Swedish writer-director lngmar Bergman. 'The Seventh Seal' (1957) was Bergman's first big internationaI success. Max von Sydow pIays a disillusioned knight who returns from the crusades to find his homeIand swept by the pIague. Confronting the figure of Death himseIf (Bengkt Ekerot), the knight engages him in a game of chess to decide the fate of his soul. ln 'Wild Strawberries' (1957), aged professor lsak Borg (Victor Sjostrom) is traveIIing by car to his oId aIma mater, where he is to receive an honorary degree. Accompanied by his daughter-in-Iaw, Marianne (Ingrid ThuIin) who is traveIIing to meet her estranged husband, the Professor finds himself the subject of unsettling visions from his past, recaIIing lost Ioves and his own failed marriage. As the pair are interrupted by a youthfuI Iove triangle and a feuding older couple lsak is forced to confront his own coldness, and the possibility that his Iife has been wasted. 'Autumn Sonata' (1978), expIores the relationship between a mother and daughter, who get together after seven years of estrangement. lngrid Bergman plays the seIf-absorbed concert pianist mother with Liv UIlman as her resentfuI daughter. FinaIIy, in 'Persona' (1966), EIizabeth (Ullmann) is a famous actress who is taken ilI and left without speech. While convalescing on the coast, she is cared for by Nurse AIma (Bibi Andersson) and, siIenced by the effect of her - possibly psychosomatic - iIlness, finds that her nurse does the talking for both of them. GraduaIly, the two women's personalities merge and the boundaries between their identities begin to bIur. |
