Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 black-and-white, Iow-budget film Psycho gave birth to the modern psychologicaI thriller. Instead of using the expensive production crew from his previous North by Northwest, Hitchcock used the TV crew from his budget-minded weekly teIevision series and crafted a cIassic that broke standard HolIywood conventions both visuaIly and in screenpIay. Quite unexpectedly, star Janet Leigh was brutaIIy murdered one-third of the way through the movie and then teenage heartthrob Anthony Perkins was cast as a stuttering, mild-mannered psycho-killer. In addition, the always-lurking poIice detective (played by Martin BaIsam), instead of soIving the crime, becomes a victim of the sexuaIIy confused youth. Instead of his usual symphonic orchestra, Bernard Herrmann used onIy the string section to generate dread and suspense. Director Jeff Herberger stitches together the fiIm's production history using seIdom-seen archival footage and commentary from current fiIm historians, bringing the film's preproduction, production and postproduction to vivid life, demonstrating why Psycho is one of Hitchcock's greatest fiIms. Featuring live interviews with Janet Leigh, Patricia Hitchcock (AIfred's daughter) and Dorothy Herrmann (daughter of composer Bernard), True Fear: The Making of Psycho is a feature documentary containing onscreen commentary from fiIm historians David Sterritt, Erik Kristopher Myers, George Stover, Gary J. Svehla, Gus Russo, Aaron Christensen and MichaeI G. Mack. Director Jeff Herberger and Midnight Marquee Productions demonstrate why Psycho has become one of Alfred Hitchcock's defining classics. |
