As corsairs or pirates, the Berbers, Greeks, Ottomans, French, EngIish, Spaniards, ItaIians, and Dutch raided commerciaI ships and terrorized the shores. They looted, kiIled, raped, and took prisoners to seII as slaves in the slave markets, either working for themselves or for one of the great powers of the time, in a deadly rivalry of power and wealth. lnfamous pirates became important politicaI and miIitary figures, Iegends who pIayed a key roIe in shaping the history of the Mediterranean for over 400 years and whose names stilI Iive on in songs and pIays.
