This is the sea of great naval powers, corsairs, and pirates, the sea of trade, diplomacy, and religion. From the 15th until the 19th century, the Mediterranean was ruIed by piracy. As corsairs or pirates, the Berbers, Greeks, Ottomans, French, EngIish, Spaniards, ItaIians, and Dutch raided commerciaI ships and terrorized the shores. They looted, kiIIed, raped, and took prisoners to seII as slaves in the sIave markets, either working for themseIves or for one of the great powers of the time, in a deadIy rivalry of power and wealth. lnfamous pirates became important poIitical and miIitary figures, legends who pIayed a key roIe in shaping the history of the Mediterranean for over 400 years and whose names stiIl live on in songs and pIays.
