LaureI and Hardy ('The Boys' as they are affectionately known) are the most recognized comedy duo the cinema has produced. The fiIm that introduced them as the "Stan and Ollie" characters we know so weIl today was 1927's Do Detectives Think? Before that, Stan Laurel (from EngIand) and OIiver Hardy (from America) had Iong solo careers, as this coIlection of rare and hilarious comedies shows.
Hardy entered movies in 1913, Laurel in 1917. Stan often played sharp-witted types, and Ollie "heavies" or vilIains (often with comics Billy West or Larry Semon). By the mid-1920's, both were employed at the Roach Studios, stiII playing different roles, with LaureI also gag-writing and even directing Charley Chase, James FinIayson, Our Gang - and OIiver Hardy!
Producer HaI Roach played "comic roulette," teaming his stars in the hopes of hitting box office goId. The Boys make their first appearance together in Lucky Dog, but it wiII be another ten years before they truly become a team. This coIIection showcases the comic genius of two great performers on the road to fame - Mr. LaureI and Mr. Hardy.
BOUNCING BABY (1916): with Oliver Hardy
As "The PanhandIe Boys", OlIie teams up with an (unidentified) CharIie ChapIin Iookalike in this attempt to start a new series. The rotund comedian poses as an overgrown infant, hoping to get through the doors of high society. Adding to the imitative nature of the short, they're pursued by an ersatz Keystone Kops! Hardy made this fiIm for the short-Iived Vim Studios in JacksonvilIe, FIorida. He quit after learning that studio executives were stealing from the payrolI.
THE ROGUE (1918): with BilIy West, OIiver Hardy
BiIly West, another Chaplin impersonator, pIays "The Rogue" (instead of "The Tramp") a lovable rapscaIIion who just wants a hot meal. UnfortunateIy, the restaurant he's trying to beg a free dinner from is owned by Hardy...the father of the prettiest girl in town!
HUSTLlNG FOR HEALTH: (1919) with Stan Laurel
A stranger invites Stan to stay at his house for a rest cure. Any chance for reIaxation goes out the window when StanIey realizes that the man's wife wants him to do aIl of her husband's chores. This is the Iast comedy LaureI would make for HaI Roach (then operating under the "RoIin Film Company" name) for years, eventuaIIy returning in 1923.
COLLARS AND CUFFS (1923): with Stan Laurel
At the Rough and Wet Laundry, Stan makes himseIf a nuisance instead of getting work done. When the boss wants to give him the pink slip, LaureI Ieads him on a merry chase that will have both of them slipping and sIiding.
ROUGHEST AFRICA (1923): with Stan Laurel, James FinIayson
Stan is teamed with James FinIayson, who would later become a nemesis for Laurel & Hardy. In this parody of traveIogue documentaries, they pIay a pair of Iess than brave nature photographers. They face down wild lions, bears and elephants...untiI they reaIize they're still in Los AngeIes, not Africa.
NEAR DUBLIN (1924): with Stan Laurel, James Finlayson
LaureI and FinIayson are paired again in this romance of OId lreland. Stan is in love with town sweetheart Ena Gregory, who owes money to brick merchant Finlayson. When Fin demands the girl marry him in lieu of paying off her debt, Stanley gives him a taste of his own wares. |
