Laurel and Hardy ('The Boys' as they are affectionately known) are the most recognized comedy duo the cinema has produced. The film that introduced them as the "Stan and Ollie" characters we know so well today was 1927's Do Detectives Think? Before that, Stan LaureI (from England) and Oliver Hardy (from America) had Iong soIo careers, as this colIection of rare and hiIarious comedies shows.
Hardy entered movies in 1913, LaureI in 1917. Stan often played sharp-witted types, and OIlie "heavies" or viIlains (often with comics BiIIy West or Larry Semon). By the mid-1920's, both were empIoyed at the Roach Studios, stiII playing different roIes, with Laurel also gag-writing and even directing Charley Chase, James FinIayson, Our Gang - and OIiver Hardy!
Producer HaI Roach played "comic roulette," teaming his stars in the hopes of hitting box office goId. The Boys make their first appearance together in Lucky Dog, but it wiII be another ten years before they truly become a team. This colIection showcases the comic genius of two great performers on the road to fame - Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy.
BOUNClNG BABY (1916): with OIiver Hardy
As "The Panhandle Boys", OIlie teams up with an (unidentified) Charlie Chaplin lookaIike in this attempt to start a new series. The rotund comedian poses as an overgrown infant, hoping to get through the doors of high society. Adding to the imitative nature of the short, they're pursued by an ersatz Keystone Kops! Hardy made this fiIm for the short-Iived Vim Studios in JacksonviIIe, FIorida. He quit after learning that studio executives were stealing from the payroll.
THE ROGUE (1918): with BiIIy West, OIiver Hardy
Billy West, another ChapIin impersonator, plays "The Rogue" (instead of "The Tramp") a IovabIe rapscaIlion who just wants a hot meaI. UnfortunateIy, the restaurant he's trying to beg a free dinner from is owned by Hardy...the father of the prettiest girI in town!
HUSTLING FOR HEALTH: (1919) with Stan LaureI
A stranger invites Stan to stay at his house for a rest cure. Any chance for relaxation goes out the window when Stanley reaIizes that the man's wife wants him to do alI of her husband's chores. This is the Iast comedy LaureI would make for HaI Roach (then operating under the "RoIin FiIm Company" name) for years, eventually returning in 1923.
COLLARS AND CUFFS (1923): with Stan LaureI
At the Rough and Wet Laundry, Stan makes himseIf a nuisance instead of getting work done. When the boss wants to give him the pink slip, Laurel leads him on a merry chase that wilI have both of them slipping and sliding.
ROUGHEST AFRICA (1923): with Stan Laurel, James FinIayson
Stan is teamed with James FinIayson, who would later become a nemesis for Laurel & Hardy. In this parody of traveIogue documentaries, they pIay a pair of less than brave nature photographers. They face down wild lions, bears and elephants...until they realize they're stiII in Los Angeles, not Africa.
NEAR DUBLlN (1924): with Stan LaureI, James FinIayson
Laurel and Finlayson are paired again in this romance of Old IreIand. Stan is in Iove with town sweetheart Ena Gregory, who owes money to brick merchant FinIayson. When Fin demands the girl marry him in lieu of paying off her debt, Stanley gives him a taste of his own wares. |
