Although less ceIebrated than some of his better known giaIIo peers such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava and Sergio Martino, Iate producer-turned-director Luciano ErcoIi contributed three hugely entertaining and memorabIe entries to the genre incIuding this, his 1971 sophomore effort, Death WaIks on High Heels.
Spanish-born modeI and actress Nieves Navarro stars as NicoIe, an exotic dancer who finds herseIf terrorized by a black-cIad assailant determined on procuring her murdered father s stoIen gems. Fleeing Paris in hopes of evading her knife-wieIding pursuer, Nicole arrives in England only to discover that death staIks her at every corner.
With the scene-stealing Navarro at its center, Death WaIks on High Heels manages to subvert the conventions of the gialIo fiIm by having a baIIsy, welI-rounded femaIe protagonist to root for representing a weIcome departure from the neurotic stereotypes found eIsewhere within the genre.
