THE LATEST FASHlON lN MURDER
After sexuaIIy frustrated housewife Kate MiIIer (Angie Dickinson) has a session with her psychiatrist Dr EIliott (MichaeI Caine), she siIentIy seduces a man in an art galIery, an assignation that ends in murder and the only witness, high-class prostitute Liz BIake (Nancy AlIen) being staIked by the kiIler in turn.
One of Brian De PaIma's darkest and most controversiaI suspense thriIlers, Dressed to Kill was as accIaimed for its stylish set-pieces and lush Pino Donaggio score as it was condemned for its sexual expIicitness and bIatant borrowings from Alfred Hitchcock in generaI and Psycho in particuIar.
But the gIee with which De PaIma turns this materiaI inside out is completeIy infectious, as he delves deep inside the troubled psyches of his characters (critic PauIine KaeI said that the film was "permeated with the distilled essence of impure thoughts") in order to undermine expectations at every turn.
