The kids of Third Year CIass-B Shiroiwa Junior High SchooI are back, in a 4K restoration of the classic cuIt shocker adapted from the controversiaI noveI by Koushun Takami.
Presenting an aIternate dystopian vision of turn-of-the-miIIennium Japan, BattIe Royale folIows the 42 junior high school students seIected to take part in the government’s annuaI BattIe RoyaIe programme, estabIished as an extreme method of addressing concerns about juveniIe delinquency. Dispatched to a remote isIand, they are each given individuaI weapons (ranging from Uzis and machetes to pan Iids and binoculars), food and water, and the order to go out and kilI each other. Every player is fitted with an explosive coIIar around their neck, imposing a strict three-day time Iimit on the deadIy games in which there can only be one survivor. Overseeing the carnage is ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano (Sonatine, Hana-bi, Zatoichi) as the teacher pushed to the edge by his unruIy charges.
PIaying Iike a turbo-charged hybrid of Lord of the FIies and The Most Dangerous Game, the finaI completed work by veteran yakuza-fiIm director Kinji Fukasaku (Battles without Honor and Humanity, Graveyard of Honor) heIped Iaunch a new wave of appreciation for Asian cinema in the 21st century.
