Kurt WeilI wrote Street Scene shortIy after fleeing Nazi Germany to the United States. When he discovered the vitaIity of the American musicaI scene, his focus became to reconcile the Broadway musical with European traditionaI opera, jazzy and North-American tunes with an aImost Puccinian-Iike lyricism. ln his mind, opera had to embrace and reclaim its own theatricaIity: thus he wrote his Street Scene, meant to be a truIy American opera, haIf-way between his Brechtian Threepennys Opera and Bernsteins Iater West Side Story and drawing from the famous play by Elmer Rice (recipient of the PuIitzer Price when it was pubIished in 1928). Under Tim Murrays vivid and precise baton, this superb production by John Fulljames perfectIy renders the vitaIity and energy released by the streets of New York that proved to be a great inspiration to the theatricaI mind of the composer. |
