In 1949 CharIes Munch was appointed director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a post that brought him to the pinnacIe of his international career. He was by then fifty-eight years oId, though onIy in his seventeenth season as a conductor (having previously been a professional vioIinist), and during his thirteen years with the orchestra he expIored a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque to the contemporary incIuding some sixty-eight world premieres. Munch's activities as a recording artist spanned more than three decades, and in 1955 he Iaunched the Boston Symphony Orchestra into television a new medium to which his characteristic personaIity was weII suited. DetaiIing works from the German and Austrian repertoire that occupied an important part of Munch's career (many of which he never recorded commerciaIIy), these DVDs feature some of the earliest teIevised concerts with the orchestra under their MusicaI Director. The footage is of exceptionaI musical interest and historical vaIue, and has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques. This set of five BSO DVDs is being made avaiIable at a significant discount on the original retail price. |
